Episode 29 (November 6 - 13)

The welding is giving way to grinding. All the welds have to be smoothed out and all the old paint has to be wire brushed off. It's a really dirty process, but a satisfying one when you spray the primer on.

Engine Tray

This tray in the engine compartment is important in a few different ways. It supports the wheel well and helps to seal the engine compartment to keep out exhaust fumes. Hopefully it's close to being in the correct position. There wasn't much left to go on from the old one.

The Other Side Too.

Although there wasn't one there before, I needed to put another tray in on the passenger's side as well.

Engine Revisited

Every now and then I have to visit the engine and make sure it remains free to turn over. This week I had to measure the engine tin and determine how it fits into the body cavity. I think I'm going to have to devise my own seal around the engine as most of the mounts for the proper rubber seal are gone.

  Sealing the Luggage Compartment

I used a couple tubes of automotive caulking to seal all the edges where the sheet metal joins. I had to lay on my back and work above my head to apply most of the goop to the seams. Many more tubes will be needed in the near future.

 Finishing Touches

Every now and then I find a seam that hasn't been welded. This is the end of the heater channel on the driver's side looking up from the floor of the shop.

Worm's Eye Views

I've spent most of my week's work on the car laying on my back grinding away the rust and sealing up the holes. This doesn't make for particularly interesting photos, but I guess they might look kind of neat. This is the underside of the luggage compartment.

Engine Compartment

I have all the important parts of the engine compartment replaced and repaired. I still have to wire brush all the rust off and prime/undercoat the original surfaces.

Paint Lessons

It's getting close to painting time for some of the body parts. Before I put the body back on the chassis I would like to paint the lower edges and spots that won't be easy to get to later. I'm astonished at the price of the paint. It will be the single most expensive component of the car. (The paint will cost more than the car itself originally did!)
