Episode 35 (January 1-15 )

Another good week for the beetle, both doors, the engine lid and the front hood are completely primed and nearly ready for paint. Everything is fitting together nicely and I am very pleased with the way it's turning out. Safety note: My Organic Chemistry professor once stated that one should always "read the label and ask questions" if uncertain about a substance. Did you know that some auto paint chemicals can actually enter your body through exposed skin and do as much damage as if they were inhaled?

Keeping Organized

I've taken off about a million small parts like door handles, latches, chrome trim and funny little screws. Most of this these parts can be reused, so I have to keep them all organized or I'll never remember where anything goes.

Small Parts

This is the bracket that connects the hinge of engine compartment lid to the body of the car. I used it as a test for the final colour of the car and to see how the finish of the enamel looked when properly applied.

Test Fit

The engine lid went on without much trouble. It took some time to align it with the body, but eventually everything fit into place and it opens and closes properly.

Hexamethylene Diisocyanate

"Airborne contaminants which can be most dangerous to your health include those that are so small that you cannot see them"

I did some reading this week and learned that the hardening agent in automotive paints can cause dizziness, shortness of breath and overexposure has caused death in lab animals.

READ LABELS & ASK QUESTIONS

Rear Fenders

Although they are new, there was still some small scratches and dents that have started to rust. I sanded out these rough parts and covered the fenders with a coat of epoxy primer.

Present State

It's starting to look like a car again!

Front Hood

There's a lot of work to be done on the hood. Although it looks smooth, there is a considerable number of dents on the curved part. I'm going to do the best I can, but I'mnot sure if I can ever get the curve smooth again.

Back in the Shop

It's been slightly above freezing here lately and there was a freezing rain warning yesterday. I keep the car under cover when outdoors, but bring it in as often as I can to avoid bad weather.

Favourite Picture So Far

Those of you that know me, know I have an oddball set of self-portraits in the style of you have seen throughout this project. I often have to find these neat angles to judge my body work using the shop lights. If you look closely, you can see the right side still has some issues to be dealt with.
