Episode 36 (January 16-31 )

Most of the dirty work is gone, the welder has been put away for a while and the shop has been thoroughly cleaned. I've spent most of the past few weeks stripping paint, priming the parts and sanding them smooth. It's neat to see the old parts coming back to life after years of neglect. If I was crazy on perfection, I'd replace some of the old parts, but they're still usable and most can be replaced easily down the road. The weather has been outstanding lately which has made the process much easier.

Small Parts

The glove box door, the speaker grills and tail light housings were stripped clean and sanded to bare metal. When I spray the larger panels I usually do a few of the smaller parts with any remaining paint and avoid waste.

Primed are ready to go.

The parts look so much better with even one coat of primer on them. Original metal surfaces seem to come out best when the primer is applied, these parts were rust free and won't need much work before final painting.

Hood (Bonnet?)

Still no conclusion on the terminology so we'll call the front hood "the bonnet" from now on. It fit on with no trouble and closes nicely.

Aligning the Doors

With a bit of monkeying around, the doors fit back into their spots and seemed to swing properly. All of the car's 'lines' are still intact which is important to me.

Ready for Paint

You have to be creative when working in small spaces. I hung the bonnet and engine lid from the ceiling while being painted. This way I can paint all sides of the part at once to save time. I've been really lucky with the weather and I don't want the body of the car outside more than it needs to be.

Change in Position

The way the bonnet hung, I wasn't able to get to its nose with the paint gun. First the underside got a coat of red, then I repositioned it to do the top. One thin tack coat of paint was put down, followed by a 20 minute wait and fairly thick coat to finish.

Doors

In the same manner, the doors relieved two coats of the red enamel. The surface of the doors is far from perfect, a fact that the highly glossed paint makes very clear. They will do for now, but I'll be looking for new doors at swap meets and wrecking yards in the future.

The Finishing Room

My wife is a very patient woman. As the parts are painted and finished, they are stored in my living room until the car body is ready to take them on. It's great to wake up in the middle of the night and come out and visit your car, I'll be needing an attached garage soon.

Paint Booth

It took me a day, but I completely cleaned my shop out, vacuumed the floors and dropped the plastic walls. I sanded the primer to nice finish with 400 sand paper and wiped the surface clean with a lint free rag and Silicon wash from Sherwin Williams.
