Episode 39 (March 1-31)

I've made significant progress on the electrical system, most of the wiring is in place. There were a few surprises along the way, but most of them were overcome with both time and money. It appears some of the electric components like the flasher unit and wiper switch are in need of replacement. The weather is warming up slowly and there is a good chance the car will be on the road for the end of May. It's so much easier to work of some of the car's components when it is out of the cramped shop.

Rear Bodywork

After 3 months in the living room, the last two fenders were finally put on the car. They went on fairly easily, all the tough fitting work was done before the car was painted.

Front Bodywork

You can see in this picture that the fender has been wet sanded but not yet polished. Actually, the edge has been polished before being bolted on, it is much easier to handle the panel when it is attached to the car.

Wrecker Find

While Dave and I were wandering through the local wrecker, we came across an early 70's bug. It had been picked over pretty carefully, but the driver's side door latch was in much better shape than mine. I carefully took it out and bought it for $5.00. It cleaned up very nicely and is now installed in my door.

Wiring Loom

If you can imagine every wire in the car carefully wrapped into a tight roll and then stuck into a large zip lock bag, then you can imagine what it was like dealing with the new wiring harness. It took about a week to unravel the mess and label everything before even attempting to put it into the car.

Referring Back

For every picture you see on this web page, there are at least three more on my ibook's hard drive. I have to refer back often to properly position the wires. Anyone considering a project like this should invest in a camera, either digital or film. The mass of torn out wires is just too overwhelming to remember it all.

Fuse box

Although fairly simple, the fuse box wiring is the most complex part of the wiring. I left all the wires attached to it and then compared it with a wiring diagram I bought off of ebay. Everything matched exactly, which really did amaze me.

From Plan to Project

With wiring diagram in hand, I bravely ran the wires through the body and the pieces of the puzzle started to fit into place. Most of the grommets came with the wiring harness, so far everything has fit just perfectly. Notice the gas tank is in place...more on that later.

Leaving them rough.

Right now I'm concerned with getting everything to fit into the car, details like light fixtures can come later. I'm just leaving them hanging out their proper openings for now. Half the battle seems to be keeping all the wires looking nice, I don't want them to look like a rat's nest when they're all done.

Instrument Panel

As the wiring goes into place, the holes in the dash are starting to fill back in. All the switches were checked with my meter before being installed. The Wiper switch and the flasher relay both failed the tests and will have to be replaced.
