Salvage Operation
I got a spare set
of doors with the car, the old guy didn't know which were better,
so he gave me both sets. It turns out the window hardware was
better on the set I decided not to put on the car. It's nice
to have 'spares' of some things.

Vent Windows
The overall condition
of the spare door vent windows was quite good. I masked the chrome
section and blasted the painted parts down and epoxy primed it
before reassembly. These parts aren't exposed, but I'm not putting
ANY rusty parts back in the car.

Window Trim
When the vent windows
were installed, it made sense to put in the window scrapers and
surrounding chrome trim. The exterior trim was a bit of a challenge,
but went in more or less undamaged. The latches that hold the
vent windows shut will eventually need to be replaced.

Ebay Find
I bought a set of
original bumpers from a guy in California through an ebay auction.
My bumpers were in dire need of rechroming and straightening.
The rust free set from the salt-free south were a very satisfying
find.

Lug Bolts
Instead of using lug
nuts, the VW uses lug bolts. The set I have were a mixed bag
of painted and rusted bolts that needed to be cleaned down to
bare metal and epoxy primed. Since my present rims won't accept
hubcaps, these bolts will be visible for a while so I want them
to look nice. I'm hoping to get a complete set of used 67 rims
from John's Bug shop soon.

Running boards
They had been installed
temporarily to align the fenders, but the time had come for them
to be secured properly. All the original hardware was replaced
with stainless bolts and washers.

Engine Tune-up
After using the engine
to drive the car in and out of the shop for a few weeks, something
suddenly 'happened' and the engine wouldn't start for me. I replaced
all the ignition components (points, condenser, cap and rotor)
and took then rebuilt the carb which needed a good cleaning.
Everything seems to be OK now, I still think there is a slight
hesitation to be dealt with.

Voltage Regulator
This car still uses
a generator instead of an alternator to charge the battery and
operate the electrical components. The voltage regulator sits
under the rear seat and has to be firmly grounded to operate
properly. This is the one that came with the car, I also picked
up a spare at a swap met a few weeks back.

Speedo In Action
Special thanks to
Bob from 'The Bug Pack' mailing list. He generously donated one
of the missing light sockets to complete the lighting of the
speedometer.
Does anybody know
what the hole in the dash above the 40 on the speedo is for?
