Episode 43 (May 16-31)

Well, we once again have missed the May 24th weekend deadline. Things are looking good for an early June safety inspection and then we're ON THE ROAD! The weather has been much nicer lately, lots of great opportunities to get work done. I'm into the detail section of the restoration. The car has been driven around the block a few times and there isn't much left to do. Of course there will always be things I want to upgrade as time goes on, it is after all a HOBBY!

Hood Emblem

A nice original piece, this hood emblem is the first bit of chrome trim to go on the car. While I wait for the weather to warm up, I'm forced to do these small tasks in my confined shop.

Rear Windows

Dave and I put the last of the windows in one sunny afternoon. They seated very nicely into position and really help to finish the look of the car. The glass is scuffed up a bit, I kind of like the 'worn-in' look.

Carpeting

With the rear windows in, I can finally start to carpet the interior. I used 3M spray contact cement to secure it in place. The rear parts fit nicely with no alterations required.

Back Seat

The seats are in really tough shape so I have to cover them up to avoid embarrassment. This knitted Afghan was a wedding present from a couple years back and served the same purpose in my last VW bus.

Visors and Headliner

I completely butchered the installation of the headliner, so I'll have to revisit that part of the car at some point in the future. It'll do for now. The visors are also a bit rough, but will also be replaced at some point.

Driver's Mirror

...there is no passenger side mirror. It's a bit pitted, but still holds its position when set. You can also see that the body chrome has been put on the car. It went on very quickly and really makes the car look sharp.

Bonnet Trim

The bonnet trim was a bit of a chore to install. The holes were about 1/8" larger than the rest of the body (obviously not the original bonnet). I had to turn about 8 little shouldered washers on my metal lathe to fit the trim clips into the larger holes. In the end, the chrome trim fits perfectly and you would never know the problem existed.

Front Detail

Notice the horn grills, the front bumper uprights, the bonnet chrome trim and a bit of the license plate. Eventually there will be an over-rider on the bumper, but the one I have is really rusty.

Rear Detail

Notice the rear bumper with over-riders, 'Volkswagen' script on the trunk lid, new tail light lenses and license plate. The car looks pretty much complete from the outside.
