Episode 44 (June 1- 23)

We're GOOD TO GO! The car passed the Ontario "Safety check" without a problem. I didn't get a picture of the actual mechanic signing the papers, but just take my work for it, it was exciting. Most of this episode is devoted the small details I had to finish before I took it into the shop. There's still lots of cosmetic stuff I'd like to clear up, so the project might never end....

Modifications

I couldn't find this door pin in any of the catalogs, so I bought a similar one at Home Depot and modified it on the lathe. As it was, the pin was too long and the door wouldn't close right.

The Application

The pin holds the retainer arm which keeps the door from opening to far. The rubber was replaced as well to keep the body as sealed as possible.

Original Blaupunkt Radio

This came from the guy I bought the car from. It fit perfectly into the dash and has a great retro look but sounds like total crap. It had to be rebuilt and I had to buy a new speaker before it would work.

Fuel Gauge

Fellow VWer Kurt had an original fuel gauge and grill (right) to replace mine (left). For the first time in 35 years the car will have a fuel gauge. Can you imagine?

First Big Ride

Dave and I took a cruise to Woodstock, Ontario (20 miles) to visit a another VWer who helped me with a temperamental distributor. Special thanks to Tom for the lessons and advice.

Gallery

This is how she sits right now. I'm quite pleased with the results so far. I took these picture on June 23, 2002. It will be interesting to see what it will look like in another year.

The Future

I will continue to post episodes as improvements are made. I plan on rebuilding the engine this winter - it has an unfortunate sounding 'knock' that I'm not keen on -etc, etc. etc. Please keep tuning in.
