Week 8/9/10 (December 18 - January 7)

I know it's been a while, but the holidays were busy and I had to divert my energy to the other portions of my life (like shovelling two feet of snow!). Progress is slowing a bit for the next few weeks as I prepare for the wedding show and we will be going on holidays in the middle of the month. Not to worry though, things are looking good for the beetle, a May 24th deadline should be a piece of cake. The final work on the chassis is all nit-picky work and not too exciting to report on, I know the die-hards among you will be interested still...so stay tuned.

Rear Seal Kit

The rear axle goes through a series of seals to keep the oil in and the other crap out. Believe it or not, all these components are needed to seal one side of the axle.

Tie Rod Ends

This is one of the new tie rod ends joined to the front axle spindle. The new ends fit on just perfectly with absolutely NO play at all. Once the weight of the body is placed back on the suspension I will have to adjust the alignment of the front wheels. This is done by threading these ends in or out until the wheels almost straight.

Front Brakes

Every component of the brake system has been replaced. This picture is of the front left brake system mounted onto the reconditioned backing plate.

Front Drums

Unlike modern cars, the old VW still uses drum brakes on the front. Disc brakes didn't come onto the VW beetle until the 90's when the new beetle came out.

First Tire ON!

Another milestone moment in the restoration. With the brakes, drums and bearings in place the next step was the tire. It was a great feeling to put the tire on and have it spin soooo smoothly without any fuss.

Master Cylinder

The last major brake component to be installed was the master cylinder. I tried to save the old brake light switches, but they were too badly rusted. New ones were fairly inexpensive, so I decide to replace them. The only thing left to do on the brake system is run the lines, that should be done soon.
